How to Adjust IKEA Cabinet Doors and Drawers: The Complete Tuning Guide
IKEA Doors and Drawers: Every Adjustment, One Guide
IKEA's hinges and drawer systems are genuinely well engineered - and fully adjustable in three dimensions. That means every crooked door and misaligned drawer front in your kitchen is a two-minute fix, not a defect. This is the same tuning walkthrough we leave with our installation clients.
All you need is a Phillips screwdriver. Never use a drill for adjustments - hand pressure gives you the feel that prevents stripping.
Adjusting IKEA Cabinet Doors (UTRUSTA Hinges)
Open the door and look at the hinge. UTRUSTA hinges have three adjustment points:
- Side-to-side (the front screw) - turning the screw closest to the door moves the door left or right. This fixes uneven vertical gaps between neighboring doors.
- Depth (the rear screw) - the screw furthest from the door pulls the door tighter to the cabinet or lets it sit further out. This fixes a door that sticks out at a corner or does not sit flush.
- Height (the mounting-plate screws) - loosen the two screws attaching the hinge to the cabinet wall, slide the door up or down, retighten. This levels the tops of adjacent doors.
Work top hinge first, then bottom, then re-check. Adjust in quarter-turns - small moves have visible effects.
Fixing Common Door Problems
- Door will not stay closed - the damper is fighting a misaligned door. Fix side-to-side alignment first; if it persists, the hinge may need its depth screw tightened.
- Soft-close slams instead of gliding - check that the door is not binding on a neighbor, then look for the small damper switch on the hinge body; it can get flipped to the off position during cleaning.
- Door dropped after a year - normal settling. Raise it with the mounting-plate screws. A once-a-year tune-up keeps everything aligned.
- Corner doors colliding - adjust both doors a millimeter away from each other using the side screws.
Adjusting IKEA Drawer Fronts (MAXIMERA)
Drawer fronts align differently - there are no visible screws from the outside:
- Height and tilt - open the drawer and find the adjustment wheels or levers on the inside of the drawer front, near each side. Turning them raises, lowers, or tilts the front until gaps are even.
- Side-to-side - most MAXIMERA fronts shift laterally by loosening the front-fixing screws inside the drawer, nudging the front, and retightening.
- Removing a drawer - pull fully open, then press the release clips underneath at both sides and lift the front edge. Reinserting is the reverse - set it on the rails and push home until it clicks.
When Adjustment Will Not Fix It
Adjustment screws solve alignment problems. They do not solve:
- A cabinet that is out of level - if a whole run of doors drifts, the cabinet boxes themselves may have settled or were never leveled. That is an installation problem, not a hinge problem.
- Stripped hinge holes - overtightened screws in particleboard lose their grip. There are repair techniques, but this is worth a professional visit.
- Warped fronts - a visibly twisted door needs replacement, not adjustment. IKEA fronts are covered by the 25-year warranty against defects - keep your receipt.
How often should you adjust IKEA cabinet doors?
Expect one settling-in adjustment a few weeks after installation, then a five-minute check once a year. Kitchens near radiators or with big seasonal humidity swings - common in pre-war NYC apartments - may drift a little more. Constant re-adjustment of the same door signals a deeper problem: a loose mounting plate, stripped screw holes, or an unlevel cabinet.
Why won't my IKEA cabinet door close all the way?
Nine times out of ten the door is binding against its neighbor or the cabinet frame because it has drifted sideways - a quarter-turn on the front hinge screw fixes it. Otherwise check for a hinge damper switched off, an item inside blocking the door, or a hinge arm that was never fully clicked onto its mounting plate (press it on until it snaps).
