Kitchen Renovation Timeline: What to Expect from Start to Finish

From placing your IKEA order to cooking your first meal in your new kitchen, a typical renovation takes 4-8 weeks. But the installation itself? That's usually just 1-3 days. Here's exactly how each phase breaks down.

After completing over 600 IKEA kitchen installations across New York and New Jersey, we've learned that the biggest source of stress isn't the work itself — it's not knowing what comes next. This guide gives you a clear, week-by-week roadmap so you can plan with confidence.

Timeline Overview

PhaseDurationWhat Happens
Planning & Design1-3 weeksMeasurements, IKEA plan, design decisions, installer quotes
Ordering & Procurement1-2 weeksIKEA order placed, countertop material selected, permits filed
Delivery & Staging3-7 daysIKEA delivery, inventory check, cabinet pre-assembly
Installation1-5 daysOld kitchen removed, new cabinets mounted, countertops and appliances installed
Finishing & Punch List1-3 daysTrim, touch-ups, final inspection, cleanup

The total end-to-end timeline depends on your kitchen size and complexity, but most projects land between 4 and 8 weeks from the day you commit to your design.

Phase 1: Planning & Design (1-3 Weeks)

This is where your renovation truly begins. Start by measuring your kitchen carefully — or better yet, have a professional do it. Then build your layout in the IKEA kitchen planner or visit your local IKEA store for a design appointment.

During this phase you should also:

  • Get installer quotes. Share your IKEA plan with at least two or three professional installers. Look for teams that specialize in IKEA SEKTION kitchens rather than general contractors.
  • Choose your countertop material. Laminate and butcher block can be ordered quickly, but quartz or granite fabrication takes 2-3 weeks after templating. Make this decision early.
  • Confirm your budget. Factor in cabinet assembly, installation labor, countertop installation, appliance installation, and any plumbing or electrical work.

Phase 2: Ordering & Procurement (1-2 Weeks)

Once your design is locked in, place your full IKEA order in a single transaction. Piecemeal ordering across multiple trips leads to missed items and version mismatches. At the same time, order your countertop material, any upgraded hardware, and specialty items like under-cabinet lighting.

If you live in a NYC co-op or condo, this is also when you should submit your alteration agreement to the building board. Some boards review monthly, so timing matters.

Phase 3: Delivery & Staging (3-7 Days)

When your IKEA delivery arrives, open every single box and cross-reference the contents against your order. Missing a single rail, hinge, or cover panel can stall your installation. Report any issues to IKEA immediately — replacement parts can take a week or more to arrive.

If you've hired a team that includes cabinet assembly as a separate service, this is when pre-assembly happens. Having cabinets built before installation day dramatically speeds up the on-site work.

Phase 4: The Installation — Day by Day

Here's where the transformation happens. For a typical medium-sized kitchen (10-15 cabinets), expect 3-5 days of on-site work. Smaller galley kitchens can be done in 1-2 days, while large U-shaped or open-concept layouts may take the full 5 days.

Day 1: Demolition and Preparation

The first day is all about clearing the way. Our kitchen removal team disconnects and removes your old cabinets, countertops, and backsplash. We inspect the walls behind the old kitchen for water damage, mold, or structural issues that need addressing. Plumbing supply lines and drain connections are checked and capped. Electrical outlets are verified for proper placement — if your new layout moves the sink or adds an island, this is when rough-in adjustments happen. By the end of Day 1, you have bare walls ready for a fresh start.

Day 2: Rail System and Wall Cabinets

IKEA's SEKTION system uses a suspension rail that must be mounted perfectly level across the full length of your wall cabinets. We laser-level the rail placement, locate studs (critical in older NYC buildings with plaster walls), and secure the rails with heavy-duty fasteners. Once the rails are set, wall cabinets go up one by one. Each cabinet is hung, leveled, and connected to its neighbor with inter-cabinet screws. Doors and hinges are adjusted for even gaps and smooth operation.

Day 3: Base Cabinets and Island

Base cabinets are positioned along the floor, shimmed level (very few NYC apartment floors are actually flat), and secured to each other and to the wall. Sink base cabinets get plumbing cutouts. If your design includes an island or peninsula, that structure is built and anchored on Day 3 as well. At this point your kitchen starts to look like a kitchen again.

Day 4: Countertop Template or Installation

If you're using IKEA laminate or butcher block countertops, they can often be cut and installed the same day. For quartz or granite, Day 4 is typically when the fabricator comes to template — they measure the exact dimensions of your installed cabinets so the stone is cut precisely. The finished stone countertops then arrive 7-10 business days later for a separate installation visit. Our countertop installation service covers both scenarios.

Day 5: Appliances, Trim, and Touch-Up

The final day brings everything together. We handle appliance installation — sliding in your range, connecting your dishwasher to supply and drain lines, mounting your microwave or range hood, and fitting your refrigerator into its enclosure. Cover panels, toe kicks, crown molding, and filler strips are cut and installed. Drawer fronts get their final alignment. We do a thorough walkthrough with you, test every door and drawer, run the dishwasher, and confirm all appliances are functioning.

Phase 5: Finishing and Punch List (1-3 Days)

After the main installation, there's usually a short list of finishing items: caulking around countertops, touch-up paint on walls where the old kitchen left marks, installation of backsplash tile if included in your scope, and any minor adjustments. We schedule a final walkthrough where you check everything and sign off.

Common Delay Causes and How to Avoid Them

Even the best-planned renovation can hit speed bumps. Here are the most common delays and how to prevent them:

  • Missing IKEA parts. Always inventory your delivery 2-3 days before installation, not the morning of. Order replacements immediately if anything is missing.
  • IKEA stock shortages. Before placing your order, check availability for every single item. If a door front or hinge is backordered, consider substitutes rather than waiting weeks.
  • Co-op board approval. Submit your alteration agreement as early as possible. Some NYC co-op boards only meet once a month, so a late submission can cost you 4+ weeks.
  • Permit delays. NYC DOB permits can take 2-8 weeks for processing. Your installer should advise you on whether your scope of work requires one.
  • Countertop fabrication lead times. Stone countertops take 2-3 weeks after templating. Plan for this gap and avoid scheduling your first dinner party too soon.
  • Plumbing or electrical surprises. Old buildings sometimes reveal corroded pipes or outdated wiring behind the walls. Budget a 10-15% contingency for unexpected issues.
  • Change orders mid-project. Changing your layout or adding cabinets after installation has started always adds time and cost. Finalize your design before Day 1.

Tips for Staying on Schedule

  1. Order everything in one shot. A complete IKEA order means no waiting for stragglers.
  2. Pre-assemble cabinets. Having boxes built before installation day can cut on-site time by 30-40%.
  3. Use one team for everything. Coordinating separate demo, install, countertop, and appliance crews is a scheduling nightmare. A single team that handles the full scope eliminates handoff delays.
  4. Decide on all finishes before installation begins. Countertop material, backsplash tile, hardware pulls, and paint color should all be locked in.
  5. Communicate with your building. Reserve the freight elevator, notify neighbors, and confirm work hours in advance.

Every kitchen is different. A galley kitchen in a New Jersey townhouse has a very different timeline than a gut renovation in a New York co-op with board approvals and freight elevator restrictions.
